Schmitt, Ward Announce Funding for Altoona Sewer Project
April 23, 2025
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) approved a $6.75 million low-interest loan to Altoona for a sewer improvement project, Rep. Lou Schmitt (R-Blair) and Sen. Judy Ward (R-30) announced.
“This loan will help the Altoona Water Authority complete a project that will benefit residents,” Schmitt said. “Aging infrastructure will be replaced with new equipment that will improve the overall sewer system in Altoona.”
The project calls for the replacement of four existing bar screens at each of its two combined sewer overflow facilities with similar screens, each having a 3/4-inch bar opening and an 84-degree screen angle and each with a 9-inch head loss at max flow. All told, eight screens will be replaced.
“A functional and efficient sewer system is essential for the public health of a community,” said Ward. “By replacing these water screens through this low-interest loan, the Altoona Water Authority can maintain an effective and compliant water system for its customers in a way that is financially responsible.”
PENNVEST is an independent state agency that provides financial assistance for sewer, storm water and drinking water projects in communities across the Commonwealth.
